Descending into the Cathedral
We dropped straight into the action at The Cathedral, Beqa Lagoon’s premier shark dive. There was no waiting around—bull sharks and reef sharks were already swarming the arena as we settled onto the ledge behind the guides.
Despite the immediate chaos of fins and teeth in front of me, I kept scanning the deep blue beyond the feeding station, hoping this would finally be the day a tiger shark decided to join the mix.
When the Tiger Shark Finally Appears
The mood shifted when the other sharks opened up a lane and a broad head with dark vertical stripes appeared in the distance—my first tiger shark in Fiji. It moved slowly and deliberately, easily the biggest animal on the scene, making calm passes between the feeders, the bait, and our group of divers.
Up close, its size and markings were unmistakable: the classic tiger stripes along the flanks and a thick, powerful body built for long ocean crossings.

Filming the Encounter: Shark Behavior
What surprised me most was how controlled the tiger shark felt. Instead of sudden bursts or erratic movements, it cruised past at a steady pace, checking everything out with slow, confident turns. Even the bull sharks seemed to give it space, changing the entire vibe of the dive.
In the video above, you can see a few of those passes, including the moment the shark goes broadside and fills the frame. I kept the camera movements minimal to let the shark’s natural motion carry the shot and put you in the middle of the encounter.
Why Tiger Shark Diving in Fiji Stands Out
Tiger shark dives in Beqa Lagoon are carefully managed, with detailed briefings and strict positioning so divers can watch the sharks behave naturally while staying safe. For many divers, that combination of close encounters, clear water, and professional shark handling makes Fiji one of the standout places to meet tiger sharks.
Seeing a tiger shark glide past in person is very different from seeing them in headlines; it puts their role in the reef ecosystem into perspective and often turns nervous first-timers into shark advocates.
Final Thoughts
After years of near-misses, finally meeting a tiger shark in Fiji turned this Beqa Lagoon dive into one of my most memorable underwater experiences. If you are interested in tiger shark diving in Fiji, this is exactly the kind of encounter that makes the long flights and early boat rides worth it.
If you’ve done a tiger shark dive yourself, I’d love to hear about it—drop your experience in the comments below.
