Fuvahmulah – Dive Guides and Scuba Divers

,

Diving in Fuvahmulah is unlike anywhere else in the Maldives. This isolated island sits directly in the path of powerful Indian Ocean currents, attracting an extraordinary concentration of large pelagic marine life. The dive guides here are central to the whole experience — without their expertise, encounters with Tiger Sharks and other open water species simply wouldn’t happen the way they do.

On open water dives like Tiger Shark Zoo, the dive guides manage the entire group with calm precision. They read the current, position divers correctly on the sandy bottom, and keep a constant eye on the sharks circling overhead. Many of the photographs in this post were captured during the safety stop — that three-to-five minute window at five meters where the sharks often come closest and the light from the surface creates dramatic backlit shots.

The safety stop at Fuvahmulah is anything but routine. With Tiger Sharks patrolling just below the surface, the dive guides stay right alongside you, monitoring the sharks’ behavior and signaling when to hold position or move. It takes trust, and the guides here earn it on every dive.

All photographs were taken with a Panasonic GH5. Dive logistics provided by Fuvahmulah Diving | Maldives.
