Some days the ocean gives you exactly what you came for, and other days it doesn’t. We made the drive out to Long Island to meet the charter at a Montauk marina, heading out with a clear plan: work the current lines and temperature breaks where mako and blue sharks hunt this time of year. It was my first time out on this particular boat, but despite our efforts, the sharks just weren’t around.

We shoved off before the morning had fully settled, the marina quiet except for our own wake pulling away from the dock. Once we cleared the point, the water opened into that flat, glassy calm that either means the sharks are holding deep or they’ve simply decided not to show. We set up, baited, and waited — which out here mostly means watching the waters and watching the clouds pass by.

Hours passed with the lines slack and the surface undisturbed — no fins, no bumps, nothing with teeth showing the slightest interest. If we weren’t going to find sharks, at least there were clouds.
