Barracuda in North Carolina

In the Shadow of a Wreck: Great Barracuda of North Carolina

The great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) is the largest of its kind in the Atlantic. While several smaller species exist, this is the only large predator divers are likely to encounter off North Carolina’s shipwrecks. Streamlined and built for speed, it is capable of bursts up to 36 mph (58 km/h). Reefs and wrecks provide perfect vantage points for ambush, where a barracuda can hold position with minimal effort before striking.

Equipped with two rows of razor-sharp teeth, the great barracuda’s stillness can be deceiving. What appears to be calm hovering is, in fact, a hunter waiting for its next opportunity. Their strategy relies on patience, conserving energy until the perfect moment to launch a lightning-fast attack. Few prey escape once those jaws snap shut.

Love the voice narration! Is that you?

It’s not my voice. I’ve been experimenting with an AI voices I designed in ElevenLabs using my own prompts. The text-to-speech feature has worked really well and sped up my workflow. Next I may train it on my voice—though I’m not crazy about how I sound.

Maybe AI can alter it to how you would like your voice to sound?

I practiced a bit more this weekend with my developing AI voice. I’m getting there but not there yet. Ideally the base sound of my voice will remain the same but I’m looking to add the presence of radio announcer and particular cadence in speech. Once I have the sound then I will need to input 2-3 hours of my voice to train the tool.

Do they give you a specific text to read when you record?

Nope—no script. I went through the FAQs and couldn’t find any predefined scripts. They do give tons of recording tips and let you upload multiple clips instead of one long 2–3 hour recording.
