Anemonefish are well-known for their fascinating symbiotic relationship with sea anemones, but their parenting behavior is just as remarkable. In this video, filmed in Dauin, Philippines, a pair of saddleback anemonefish (Amphiprion polymnus) fiercely protect their eggs. You can see them in action. The eggs are not on a typical rocky or coral surface. Instead, they are on an abandoned green bottle nestled near their anemone.
This unique nesting choice offers an intriguing glimpse into marine life’s adaptability. These fish will use any stable surface available to ensure the survival of their eggs.
Saddleback anemonefish are easily recognizable by their broad white saddle-like band. This band stretches across their upper back and contrasts against their darker body. Like other anemonefish, they follow a strict social structure within their host anemone. The dominant female is the largest individual in the group. Her mate, the most prominent male, takes responsibility for egg care once they are laid.
Rather than attaching their eggs to coral or rock, these anemonefish found an alternative—an abandoned green bottle. This surface serves the same purpose as a natural nesting site. It provides a solid attachment point for the eggs. It also keeps them close to their protective anemone.
Once laid, the male takes on the role of a devoted caretaker. He fans the eggs with his fins to keep them oxygenated. He uses his mouth to remove any that don’t develop properly. The eggs will hatch in about 6–10 days. Tiny larvae will be released into the open ocean. There, they drift as plankton before settling into a new anemone.
Some anemonefish are known for their bold and aggressive defense of their eggs. In the video, you can see them darting around the nest, chasing away any perceived threats—including the camera! This territorial behavior is crucial for the survival of their young. Predators such as wrasses or damselfish are always on the lookout for an easy meal.
All anemonefish are sequential hermaphrodites. They are all born male. If the dominant female dies, the largest male will become a female to take her place. This ensures that a breeding pair is always present within the anemone. Once the male transitions, the next largest juvenile in the hierarchy matures into the breeding male.
These anemonefish chose a discarded bottle as their nesting site. This choice is a powerful reminder of how marine life adapts to environmental changes. The bottle provided a safe surface for their eggs. It also highlights the growing presence of human debris in aquatic ecosystems.
