Diving in the Caribbean offers countless opportunities to observe sea turtles in their natural habitat. Whether gliding effortlessly through the water or munching on seagrass, they are a sight to behold. These ancient mariners have been swimming in our oceans for over 100 million years. Witnessing them up close is always a humbling experience.
The Caribbean is home to several sea turtle species, each with unique characteristics:
- Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) – These turtles are often seen grazing on seagrass beds. They are known for their smooth, olive-green shells.
- Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) – These turtles have striking patterns on their shells. Hawksbills are often found near coral reefs. They feed on sponges.
- Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta) – These powerful turtles have large heads and strong jaws, making them expert hunters of crustaceans.
- Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) – This species is the largest of all sea turtles. Leatherbacks can be spotted in deeper waters as they search for jellyfish.
Encountering sea turtles is a dream for many divers. However, their survival is increasingly threatened by habitat destruction, plastic pollution, and climate change. Here’s how we can all help:
- Reduce plastic waste, especially single-use plastics that end up in the ocean.
- Support marine conservation organizations dedicated to turtle protection.
- Follow responsible diving and snorkeling practices by not touching or disturbing turtles.
