This was the first animal I shot when I arrive at the Revillagigedo Archipelago in Mexico. Initially, I thought it was a Torpedo Ray but the roundness of its mouth and dorsal fins didn’t match. I had to reach out to the internet to correctly identify the creature as a Giant Electric Ray.
The Giant Electric Ray (Narcine entemedor) is also known as the Cortez Electric Ray. It can be typically found in the eastern Pacific Ocean from the Gulf of California to Panama. The ray dwells on sandy bottoms close to coral reefs.
This ray can deliver a painful electric shock when aggravated or threatened. It’s spends most of the day half-buried in under the sand.
