Pod of dolphins swimming with free divers and snorklers

Happy World Dolphin Day!

Today is great day to celebrate one of the smartest and beloved creatures in the ocean.

There are over 40 species of dolphins inhabiting nearly all environments (freshwater and saltwater) underwater. Dolphins produce elaborate sounds such as clicks, squawks, speaks barks, etc. to communicate. They also have a healthy appetite for fish which they generally swallow head first so the fish’s spines do not get caught in their throat.

Unfortunately, the biggest threat to Dolphins are humans. Dolphins are often killed accidently in fishing gear.

Below is the first encounter I was able to capture on video many years ago during a safety stop. Also, I shot this on my first underwater compact camera.

It’s always an exciting moment when dolphins come around to check out and play with scuba divers and snorkelers.

    1. Roatan is a fun place to dive. It might also be one of my favorites. You never know what you might see – Dolphins, Whale Sharks, Ray’s, etc. And on top of that, it’s a reasonable priced island for a nice holiday.
