I spent a day diving with the team from Atlantis Diving Bali. I requested a dive site called The Gilis which is located off the eastern coast of Bali, Indonesia. The Gilis dive site consists of three dive areas – Gili Tepekong, Gili Mimpang, and Gili Biaha. On this day, we only dived Gili Tepekong and Gili Biaha.

The team from Atlantis Diving Bali run a quite efficient dive operation. They can organize trips essentially everywhere in Bali. I booked a dive package on-line which included hotel transfer and discounts because I was using my own gear. The driver picked me up on-time at my hotel. On the way to the dive shop, we picked up 3 or 4 more divers who were also taking the trip.

After completing the shops due-diligence, we made our way to the dive site. The dive shop drove us by van to Padang Bai where we met the day boat. The van ride was about an hour and the boat took about 20-30 minutes to reach the first dive site – Gili Biaha.

The dives were led by Depo and we were lucky to have two other Divemaster’s/Instructor’s from Atlantis Bali who never visited the site before. One of the Divemaster’s/Instructor’s and I were mutually following each other on Instagram. It was really cool to randomly meet her on a dive. All three divemaster’s/instructor’s pointed out creatures of interest.

Gili Biaha:

Before I arrived in Bali, I did a bit of pre-dive research and I knew there might be strong currents and low visibility. However, under any of challenging conditions, chances of seeing Sharks, Mantas, and Mola Mola’s were extremely high because of northern currents. Visibility was pretty poor during both dives but we saw about 10 sharks that were resting in a cavern, a bunch of nudibranchs along the rocky bottom, and extremely health coral along the walls at Gili Biaha. My max depth on this dive was around 100ft.

Gili Tepekong:

The team from Atlantis Bali provided us with a tasty Indonesia lunch after the first dive. I should have taken a picture but I forgot. During this dive we saw a few more Nudibranchs, Eels, Octopus, Anemones with Porcelain Crabs and much more. Depo, the lead dive master took us through a nice swim-through. Along the wall we saw a scorpionfish which was oddly moving pretty fast so I missed my photo opportunity. Also, along the walls there was a ton of beautiful and health coral. I guess, because of current and visibility the sites do not get many divers. My max depth on this dive was 122ft.

Currents on both dives were not bad. However, for underwater videography and photography, the currents were not ideal.
